A Success Story About Mr. C
I wanted to share a recent success story about a client, "Mr. C," that highlights the value of working with an experienced underwriting partner like Verity.
Mr. C and his wife, Mrs. A, recently welcomed a baby girl into their family. After some research, Mr. C found out that if he lost his job or got fired, he would likely not be able to keep his group life insurance policy. He was concerned that if he was no longer there to provide an income for his family, they would be left without financial security. Consequently, Mr. C decided to purchase an individual life insurance policy.
Originally, Mr. C applied for a life insurance policy online through a website advertising that term insurance could be obtained without a medical exam. He was unaware that the advertised low prices and the exam exemption were contingent upon good health. Mr. C was frustrated because the website implied that everyone was eligible, so he did not hesitate to apply.
Unfortunately, he was declined for coverage without a clear explanation. When he sought clarification, he was informed that the decision was based on a report, which he was able to request. However, the copy he received was a lengthy document that provided no clear indication as to why his application was denied.
At this point Mr. C contacted me, Anthony Pfammatter, at Verity Underwriting Partners. I was able to use my standard intake questions to quickly determine what the problem might have been. Mr. C was taking a medication called naltrexone. Normally this medication is taken for drug or alcohol cessation but he had not history of a drug or alcohol problem. After some digging, I found that he was taking this medication due to a mild eating disorder. This condition was under control and Mr. Cās height and weight had been stable.
With this context, I reached out anonymously to our network of carriers. While most initially indicated they would decline the application due to the naltrexone use, one carrier responded with a potential offer. Ultimately, they extended an offer at their third-best rate class.
In the end, Mr. C secured $2 million of 30 year term insurance for his wife and new baby girl. What a success!
