Is Long Term Care a Waste of Money?

Long-term care (LTC) planning is a cornerstone of a sound retirement strategy, yet many individuals delay taking action due to uncertainty:

  • What if I pay into a policy and never end up needing care?

  • What if rate increases make the premiums unaffordable?

  • How complex is the claims process when access to funds is critical?

Traditional stand-alone LTC coverage often carries the risk of rising premiums and operates on a "use-it-or-lose-it" basis. However, modern financial products offer flexible solutions designed to eliminate these concerns:

  • Hybrid Life + LTC Policies: These solutions lock in premium costs and guarantee a death benefit payout if care is never required. Furthermore, many hybrid plans pay out on an indemnity basis, dispensing approved monthly funds directly to you without requiring ongoing receipt submissions.

  • Life Insurance with LTC Riders: Similar to hybrid structures, these policies offer flexible benefit access while maintaining a primary focus on maximizing the life insurance benefit for your beneficiaries.

Protecting your retirement assets requires the right structure. Reach out to Verity Underwriting Partners today to evaluate which LTC solution aligns with your long-term plan.

How Much Insurance Can I Get With No Exam?

Commercials for "no-exam" life insurance make fast coverage look effortless. But are these offers too good to be true? Sometimes, yes.

Navigating Accelerated Underwriting can be tricky. Will your rate be genuinely competitive? Will the death benefit be restricted or graded during the first few years? And what if you need a higher coverage amount?

Here is a breakdown of what is actually available today:

  • How It Works: In automated underwriting, carriers evaluate traditional term and permanent policies by analyzing digital health and background data—such as motor vehicle records and prescription drug databases—rather than requiring blood work.

  • The Approval Gap: Accelerated Underwriting programs vary significantly by carrier. Some place only 20% of applicants into a no-exam path, while top-tier carriers approve up to 75% without fluids.

  • Pricing Pitfalls: Specialized "instant-approval" products frequently charge a premium for convenience.

The Bottom Line: If a no-exam promise seems too good to be true, there is usually a tradeoff in cost or coverage. However, skipping the exam doesn't have to mean paying more.

At Verity Underwriting Partners, we have access to virtually every major carrier with streamlined underwriting. We can place policies up to $10 million with no medical exam, structured so you pay the exact same rates as traditional term insurance.

Whether you need fast coverage to close a business loan, want to avoid blood draws and needles, or simply want the smoothest application experience possible, we are here to guide you.

My Skin Got Me Rated for Life Insurance?

Over 8 million Americans live with psoriasis or similar immune-mediated skin conditions. For most, it never crosses their mind that a routine skin diagnosis could impact their life insurance rates.

The reality? Insurance underwriters often focus heavily on the systemic medications used to manage these conditions, which can lead to hefty policy table ratings.

Case in point: A client recently came to us after being given a 150% rating on their life insurance application due to a recent psoriasis diagnosis. The premium was going to cost nearly double what they originally expected.

We stepped in, gathered a clear summary of their actual health profile, current treatments, and control metrics, and shopped the case to a carrier with a more favorable underwriting niche.

The result: We secured a Standard rate, with an opportunity for Preferred using health credits.

No client should pay inflated premiums for a condition that is well-managed. At Verity Underwriting Partners LLC, we do the heavy lifting to ensure you get the rate and coverage you actually deserve.

What Are Living Benefits

Life insurance is usually seen as a selfless act for your family—a safety net that protects their future after you’re gone. But what if you could actually use those benefits while you’re still alive?

The Problem with Traditional Coverage One of the biggest hesitations people have with long-term care (LTC) insurance or traditional life insurance is the "use-it-or-lose-it" factor. You might pay premiums for decades and never need long-term care, leaving you feeling like you wasted hard-earned money. On top of that, stand-alone LTC insurance premiums can skyrocket over time, eventually becoming unaffordable.

Enter the Chronic & Critical Illness Rider Many modern term life insurance policies now include living benefits—often at no extra cost.

If you reach a point where you can no longer perform basic daily tasks (like buttoning your shirt or feeding yourself), a chronic illness rider allows you to access a portion of your death benefit early to pay for care. Many policies also include critical illness riders, which provide a lump-sum payout if you experience a major health event like a heart attack, stroke, or cancer diagnosis.

The best part? These policies often cost the exact same as traditional term insurance options that offer no living benefits at all.

Chronic Illness vs. True Long-Term Care Riders You can also opt for a policy with a "true" long-term care rider. While they sound similar on the surface, a true LTC rider operates differently than a free chronic illness rider—and choosing the right one depends entirely on your long-term financial strategy.

Let’s Find the Right Fit for You Whether you’re curious about term policies with free built-in living benefits or want to explore comprehensive LTC riders, protecting your future doesn't have to mean sacrificing your savings today.

A Personal Story About Life Insurance

Today, I want to share a story that is deeply personal to me: the story of my father’s life insurance policy, and the last lesson he taught me before he passed away.

My father, Mike Pfammatter, was a natural planner. He and my mother had their retirement vision clearly in sight—a quiet life together at their summer home in Wisconsin. He felt largely prepared, but he knew he needed to work just a few more years to reach the final $700,000 safety net he wanted for my mother’s security. To protect her and bridge that gap in the meantime, he decided the most responsible step was to purchase a life insurance policy.

He was a remarkably healthy man, so we expected underwriting to be straightforward. He called me to apply for a 10-year term policy. As expected, he sailed through the process and was approved at the very best rate class.

We were just waiting on the final delivery documents when my phone rang at 4:00 in the morning. My father had passed away suddenly in the night from a hidden arterial blockage—one that even his doctors hadn't known existed.

It is so easy for any of us to put off securing life insurance. We tell ourselves we’ll wait until money is less tight, or until we lose a few pounds to get a better rate. But life can change in a single night, and waiting can leave the people we love vulnerable.

Though losing my father was painful, his foresight changed my life. Watching him take that final step to safeguard my mother gave me a profound realization of how vital this work truly is. It gave me the conviction to protect my own family, and it drives the care I bring to every family I serve.

Please don't wait to protect the people who mean the most to you.

A Success Story About Mr. C

I wanted to share a recent success story about a client, "Mr. C," that highlights the value of working with an experienced underwriting partner like Verity.

Mr. C and his wife, Mrs. A, recently welcomed a baby girl into their family. After some research, Mr. C found out that if he lost his job or got fired, he would likely not be able to keep his group life insurance policy. He was concerned that if he was no longer there to provide an income for his family, they would be left without financial security. Consequently, Mr. C decided to purchase an individual life insurance policy.

Originally, Mr. C applied for a life insurance policy online through a website advertising that term insurance could be obtained without a medical exam. He was unaware that the advertised low prices and the exam exemption were contingent upon good health. Mr. C was frustrated because the website implied that everyone was eligible, so he did not hesitate to apply.

Unfortunately, he was declined for coverage without a clear explanation. When he sought clarification, he was informed that the decision was based on a report, which he was able to request. However, the copy he received was a lengthy document that provided no clear indication as to why his application was denied.

At this point Mr. C contacted me, Anthony Pfammatter, at Verity Underwriting Partners. I was able to use my standard intake questions to quickly determine what the problem might have been. Mr. C was taking a medication called naltrexone. Normally this medication is taken for drug or alcohol cessation but he had not history of a drug or alcohol problem. After some digging, I found that he was taking this medication due to a mild eating disorder. This condition was under control and Mr. C’s height and weight had been stable.

With this context, I reached out anonymously to our network of carriers. While most initially indicated they would decline the application due to the naltrexone use, one carrier responded with a potential offer. Ultimately, they extended an offer at their third-best rate class.

In the end, Mr. C secured $2 million of 30 year term insurance for his wife and new baby girl. What a success!
